10 Exciting Things about S.M.ALL's European Mobility Week 2024

European Mobility Week 2024 - 16-21 September - came alive in the partner cities of the URBACT S.M.ALL project, promoting sustainable transportation and vibrant communities. 

Here are ten engaging activities and initiatives that took place. 

Joining the Movement in Škofja Loka This charming Slovenian town is taking strides to reduce car traffic and took the occasion to experience car-free streets alive with energy as educational events unfold. Workshops designed to promote walking and cycling helped citizens to learn practical tips for a greener lifestyle, while connecting with the community.

Celebrating Park(ing) Day in Strasbourg: After a decade-long hiatus, Park(ing) Day returned with a twist and allowed people to engage with creative transformations of parking spaces into public art zones, community hubs, and leisure areas - the vélo-smoothie station outside the Schluthfeld school, where cycling meets creativity, and the local artists re-imagining public spaces.

Exploring the Expo du Vélo A dive into cycling culture at one of France's largest bicycle fairs in Strasbourg, perfect for families, professionals, and passionate about active, sustainable, and funny lifestyles. The Expo allowed kids to learn about cycling safety and try out different bike models, have fun and enjoy education for all ages to build the foundations of the future. And did you spot the Bucharest's S.M.ALL group glancing around the fair?

 

 

Experiencing Car-Free Living Still in Strasbourg, "Sans Voiture Simone" initiative transformed the St. Florent neighborhood into a car-free zone. Live performances, arts, and community activities showcased the potential of public spaces when freed from vehicle congestion, providing the perfect opportunity to meet neighbors and celebrate together!

Trying Out TUBABIKE in Barcelos In Portugal, Barcelos has launched the TUBABIKE bike-sharing system, featuring 200 bicycles available at 40 stations throughout the city. Hopping on a bike to explore the beautiful urban landscape, while contributing to a sustainable community, keep being a fantastic way to see the sights while reducing your carbon footprint.

Engaging with Schools in Braga Braga is fostering the next generation of eco-conscious citizens through engaging workshops and campaigns in schools. For the 2024 EU Mobility Wees, kids have been involved in road safety simulations, learning vital skills while having fun. This initiative aimed to instill a culture of sustainable travel from an early age - empowering young minds to make greener choices.

Promoting Public Transport in Guimarães Even local football heroes in Guimarães advocate for public transportation! The campaign aimed to encourage citizens to leave their cars at home and embrace buses as a sustainable option. By highlighting public transport’s benefits, the initiative would contribute to create a cleaner environment and a more connected community.

The sense of Ferrara for sustainable urban development How can a Renaissance city innovate its street to host spaces and facilities for sustainable mobility? The answer has been provided by the round-table dedicated by FIAB Ferrara to the themes of Placemaking and tactical Urbanism, under the spotlights of the Municipality in many EU-funded projects, and a cycling city trip for architects only!

Enjoying Nature in the Po Delta On the weekend, the cycling trips organized by FIAB "Pedale Stanco" circle, in Codigoro, guided tours through the stunning landscapes of the Po Delta encourage active mobility and slow tourism. Experience the tranquility of nature while promoting awareness of environmental preservation.

 

 

Connecting at the Fifth S.M.ALL Meeting in Druskininkai! Whilst the cities came alive to celebrate the most sparkling week of the year, the representatives of Ferrara, Komotini, Larissa, Škofja Loka, Strasbourg, Sofia, Quadrilatero, and Bucharest enjoyed the warm welcome of Druskininkai, delving into the 5th Transnational Meeting to progress in their development of the Action Plans for a Sustainable Mobility for ALL!
